Boiler Types Explained
Combi Boiler
A combination or ‘combi’ boiler is a high-efficiency water heater and central heating boiler in one compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap. This means you won’t need a hot water cylinder or a cold water tank in the roof.
They are cost-effective and energy-efficient. Water heats instantly, so there’s no need to store it in a cylinder. Another benefit is that hot water comes at mains pressure, allowing for a powerful shower without needing a separate pump.
System Boiler
System boilers need a cylinder to store hot water. However, the main heating and hot water parts are built into the boiler. This makes installation quicker and easier. There’s also no need for a tank in the loft. This is ideal for homes with little or no loft space, or where that space is for a conversion.
These boilers work well with solar water heating systems. This setup offers environmental benefits and can lower energy bills.
Regular Boiler
Regular boilers, also called traditional, conventional, or heat-only boilers, are great for homes with a traditional heating and hot water system. These systems connect to a separate hot water cylinder. They also require a cold water storage tank in the loft to supply the hot water cylinder and a tank to keep the central heating water level stable.
If you’re replacing an older boiler, a regular boiler might be best, especially if you have an older radiator system. This is because older systems often can’t handle the higher water pressure from system or combi boilers.
